| Biography
While still a child, Linda Hunt decided to become an actress, and began taking drama lessons at age 13. As she was quite small (4'9") and not a great beauty, she also studied directing, in case she never landed any acting roles. Hunt majored in directing at the prestigious Goodman Theater School in Chicago, and went on to spend several years in New York, working as a stage manager, director, and occasionally as an actress; during some of that time she worked in alternative theater with companies such as La Mama and the Open Theater. Following years of getting bit parts and directing for a children's theater, Hunt finally started landing good roles and ultimately won two Obie awards and a Tony nomination. She debuted onscreen in Robert Altman's Popeye (1980), but it was her second film, The Year of Living Dangerously (1983), that made her internationally known; for her portrayal of a male Indonesian dwarf, she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. She went on to have a fairly busy and successful film career as a character and supporting actress, often winning raves for her performances.

Trivia
- Attended the Interlochen Arts Academy. She was a charter student the first year of the Interlochen Arts Academy which was established in 1962 as a complement to the Interlochen Arts Camp which had been established in 1928.
- The only actor to have won an Academy Award portraying a member of the opposite sex, she won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar for her role as Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). Note this was not Linda Hunt playing a woman pretending to be a man, like Barbra Streisand did in Yentl (1983) or, in reverse, as Dustin Hoffman did in Tootsie (1982), but Hunt playing a man in a serious drama.
- Has twice played male roles that did not feature or reference her actual female status: Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) and The Management in "Carnivàle" (2003) (who, though unseen, is often referred to by other characters as male).
- Was nominated for Broadway's 1984 Tony Award as Best Actress (Play) for Arthur L. Kopit's "End of the World."
- Ranked #9 on Tropopkin's Top 25 Most Intriguing People [Issue #100]
